From your job description, you can write your job advert.  It needs to be clear for people to read.  It needs to be short so you don’t have to pay too much to advertise, and it doesn’t confuse applicants.  It needs:

Job Title – Personal Assistant

Hours – 15 hours per week

Purpose of job – To support a disabled woman to live independently

Main features of the job – Will include support with personal care, driving and administrative skills

Contact – 01432-356467 (ref: AB) leaving name and number

Try to keep  in mind when you advertise the sort of person you want as a P.A. There is little point in advertising in Parachute Weekly if you are hoping for someone who is going to be quiet, and easy going!!!

Also think about  practicalities such as travel. If you live in Leominster there is little point advertising in the Monmouthshire Beacon.  Likewise, if you live in Hereford and are employing for a couple of hours a day, it may be unsuitable to employ somebody from Ross-on-Wye, as it would be a long way to travel for that space of time.

If you are asking your personal assistant to be flexible or to be on call, it might be more suitable for you to have a P.A. who lives nearby. If you are employing for live-in personal assistants, you can advertise more widely as people will only be having to journey to work once or twice a week.

The best people to ask where to advertise are the good P.A’s people have already recruited. They can tell you where they saw the job adverts. A peer group can also offer advice upon this and any other part of the recruitment process.

If you use a local recruitment service they will have a list of local papers that have a vacancy section in which you can place an advert. Some people who have recruited have found advertising in the Hereford Times, Journal  and Hereford Ad Mag produced a good response.

Also try:

·        Job Centre – Employers Direct 0845 601 2001 www.employmentservice.gov.uk

·        Colleges

·        Newsagents

·        Post Office

·        NCIL websites

·        PA websites local to you.

A good recruitment service will:

·        Check out the wording of the advert and place the advert .

·        Take phone calls regarding questions about the job on your behalf.

·        Give a brief description of your job over the phone

·        Send out application forms, job descriptions and a covering letter.

·        Receive application forms and send them on to you.

·        Cover the cost of the paperwork and postage of the above.
