Governance          Social/Medical Model

HCIL is an organisation of disabled people, controlled by disabled people.

Our focus is Independent Living. By this we mean the services and support that enable disabled and older people to have control and choice over where they live and what they do, including being able to work or volunteer, choosing where they live and with whom, having access to fulfilling and rewarding social lives with family and friends and leisure opportunities. Independent living is about enabling disabled people to have the opportunity to participate fully in society on equal terms with non-disabled people.

Our vision:

A world of difference where individuality is valued and everyone has the opportunity to achieve and to give.

Our mission is:

‘Supporting disabled/older people to have control and choice.

Encouraging ideas and policies that enable everyone to achieve their goals ’.

Our Aims:

  • Disabled people are in control of their lives.
  • There are no barriers.
  • Disabled people use and develop their skills and knowledge

HCIL Core Values

As an organisation HCIL works within the Social Model of Disability and as such our Core Values are derived from our commitment to this model.

Equality of opportunity
We are committed to equality of opportunity for all through embracing and understanding individual differences and showing respect for others beliefs.

Personal development
We encourage staff, members and volunteers to express their passion, knowledge, energy, views and ideas. We provide opportunities to develop skills. We actively encourage and support ongoing professional development throughout the organisation.

Community
We have a responsibility to the community in which we work and operate our services. We inform the community of our work and our values, and raise awareness of disability issues.

Fairness/Openness
We run all our services in a fair and even-handed way. As representatives of HCIL we are responsible for the commitments and agreements that we make, both through our personal behaviour and the way that we carry out our duties.

Respect
We believe that everyone deserves respect.

Honesty
Honesty and integrity are central to everything we do.
